Brooklyn, NY— The Brooklyn College men's tennis team delivered a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon, defeating St. Joseph's University (L.I.), 6-1, at the Roosevelt Tennis Courts. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 7-3 on the season. The Golden Eagles drop to 1-6. Next Up: Brooklyn is back on the road on Tuesday, April 14, for a non-conference tilt at the United State Merchant Marine Academy at 4pm.
Brooklyn set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches in convincing fashion. The top duo of Giorgi Zhamutashvili and James Walsh secured a 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Allen Mardakhayev and Dennis Shender followed with a 6-1 win at No. 2. Dylan Augustin and Christopher Vasquez completed the sweep with a 6-0 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Carrying momentum into singles play, the Bulldogs continued to control the match, winning five of six flights. Zhamutashvili led the way at No. 1 singles with a straight-sets victory (6-1, 6-1), while Mardakhayev was equally strong at No. 2, earning a 6-2, 6-4 win. Shender added another point at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-3 decision.
At No. 4 singles, Walsh cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory, and Raymond Kazim closed out the scoring for Brooklyn with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6.
St. Joseph's lone point came at No. 5 singles, where Vincent Engel outlasted Christopher Vasquez in a tightly contested super-tiebreaker [6-1, 7-6 (7-2), 10-6).
